B-ACTIVE, BASTON'S PROJECT FOR SPORT, LEISURE AND YOUTH

In 2002, a group of local residents decided that the village needed an area where a range of sports could be conducted. The cost of a sports hall was thought to be prohibitive, so the project was focused on a multi-use sports and skateboarding area. Following a village wide survey, which had a 37% return rate, a public meeting was held in June 2002. As a result of both the survey and public meeting, it was decided that there was a mandate from the village to progress the project. Consequently, B-Active was formed as a sub-committee of the BPFMC.

Committee:

The committee is made of about 7 volunteers from the village and is chaired by Trevor Gibson. Within the committee there are fundraising, finance, grants, youth liaison, site, sponsorship and publicity members, all of whom report to the committee at the monthly meeting.

The Committee meets through the year to plan future events. These are publicised in Baston News and, where possible, through the “What’s On” pages of this web-site.

Fundraising:

“B-Active” raises funds through community focused activities and events throughout the year. These include the annual Tennis Open Fun Day together with Ceilidhs, Burns Nights, Carol Singing and Christmas Tree Shredding. Thanks to “B-Active”, 2007 saw the return of a traditional street market to village after a break of many decades. Many of the events have become popular sell-outs in the Baston social calendar!

Since its creation in 2002, “B-Active” has raised over £51,000 (£13,500 from village fund raising events alone). In line with the group’s purpose, the money has been used to refurbish and re-open the disused grass tennis courts on the main playing field which have been in use since the summer of 2004. The group has also installed a rebound wall for all year round football, cricket and basketball practice which it hopes to turn into a full size multi-use games area when funds allow.

“B-Active” is appreciative of the support it receives for events and activities it organises. Without this support, none of the successes achieved so far would have been possible.
